Hemodialysis

Hemodialysis – What It Is & When You Need It

Hemodialysis is a life-saving medical treatment used to filter waste, toxins, and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys are no longer functioning properly. It is most commonly used for patients with end-stage kidney failure or chronic kidney disease.

🧬 Why It's Needed:
  • Chronic kidney failure (CKD stage 5)
  • Acute kidney injury that affects waste removal
  • Severe fluid overload or electrolyte imbalance
  • Poisoning or drug overdose in certain situations
🩻 How It Works:
  • Blood is drawn from the body via a vascular access (usually in the arm)
  • It flows through a dialyzer (artificial kidney) where it is cleaned
  • Cleaned blood is returned to the body
  • Treatments usually last 3–4 hours, 3 times a week
⚠️ Possible Side Effects:
  • Fatigue after sessions
  • Low blood pressure
  • Muscle cramps
  • Infections at access site

Hemodialysis greatly improves quality of life and survival for kidney failure patients. Regular monitoring and a healthy lifestyle help patients feel better and live longer. Always consult a nephrologist to understand your dialysis needs.
